SSC CGL 2024 going to be highly competitive, because as per RTI response 36.73 lakhs candidates has applied for examination this year which is approximately 12 lakh more than previous year . Due to such intense competition, setting a target score is crucial for effective preparation. This article will discuss what could be considered a safe or reasonable target score for candidates who want to clear the SSC CGL 2024 examination.
This year, SSC CGL 2024 has announced approximately 17,727 vacancies, making it the second-largest vacancy released by SSC in recent years. This represents a golden opportunity for candidates, as the number of vacancies has nearly doubled compared to 2023. Such a large vacancy may not be seen again in the near future. Let’s examine some data from previous years:
- In 2021, about 20.80 lakh applications were submitted for 7,621 vacancies.
- In 2022, SSC released its largest vacancy in recent years with 36,012 posts, attracting around 34.80 lakh applications.
- In 2023, SSC announced 8,415 posts, receiving approximately 24.74 lakh applications.
What should be your score to crack SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam?
Let’s analyze the safe scores by looking at previous years’ vacancies and Tier 1 cut-offs: Here we will discuss the cut-offs SSC released for past exams. SSC issues separate cut-offs for AAO posts and all other posts, so we’ll examine both. We’ll also look at how many candidates qualified at these scores.
Exam name (year wise) | Vacancies Released | Cut off UR for AAO* Posts (candidates available) | Cut off UR all other posts (candidates available) |
SSC CGL 2020 | 7108 | 167.45963 (1228) | 132.37260 (20,572) |
SSC CGL 2021 | 7621 | 159.07699 (2162) | 130.18384 (15,904) |
SSC CGL 2022 | 36,012 | 158.36560 (4776) | 114.27651 (73,065) |
SSC CGL 2023 | 8415 | 169.67168 (914) | 150.04936 (13,133) |
* Note – The Post of Assistant Audit officer is not in the notification of SSC CGL 2024.
Analyzing these trends, we can predict a safe score for SSC CGL 2024. In CGL 2020 and 2021, with vacancies between 7,000-8,000, the cut-off ranged from 130-132. However, in CGL 2023, despite having 8,415 vacancies, the cut-off increased significantly to 150+. This was primarily because SSC qualified candidates approximately 10 times the number of vacancies in 2022 and 2023, compared to 15 times in 2020 and 2021. In CGL 2022, with the highest vacancies in recent years, the cut-off decreased drastically to 114+.
For SSC CGL 2024, with 17,727 tentative vacancies (more than double the previous year and almost half of 2022), we can make the following predictions:
-
If SSC selects approximately 10 times the number of vacancies, the cut-off may range from 130-135.
-
If SSC selects 15 times the number of vacancies, the cut-off could be lower, ranging from 125-130.

These predictions are based on previous trends. However, the actual cut-off will depend on various factors, including the number of candidates appearing for the exam and the difficulty level of the exam (easy, moderate, or difficult), which can only be determined after the exam takes place. However, to be on a very safer side a candidate should score around 150+ marks.
It’s important to note that since SSC changed its pattern in CGL 2022, the Prelims exam is now only for qualification. Candidates should focus their efforts on the Mains exam, as the final selection and ranking will be based on the Mains performance.
