The UPSC exam is conducted in three stages:

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims): It consists of two objective-type papers – General Studies Paper-I and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The Prelims exam serves as a screening test, and the marks obtained in this stage are not considered for the final ranking.
2. Main Examination (Mains): This stage comprises a written examination with nine subjective papers, including subjects such as Essays, General Studies, and optional subjects chosen by the candidates. The marks obtained in the Mains exam, along with the interview stage, are considered for the final ranking.
3. Personal Interview (Personality Test): Candidates who clear the Mains exam are called for the interview round, where a board of experts assesses their personality, communication skills, and overall suitability for administrative roles.

The final selection of candidates is based on the cumulative marks obtained in the Mains exam and the interview stage.
