At a young age, many of us are fascinated by the uniform services such as the police, army, navy and air force. This fascination fuels our imagination for serving our nation by joining one of these uniform services that command substantial power and respect.
When we finish our graduation degrees, we aspire to enter the workforce draped in the uniform of our dream job. Among the various options available to us, the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) provides us with the opportunity to join different high-paying uniform jobs.
SSC CGL Uniform Posts
The uniform posts offered in SSC CGL are one of the highest-paid Group B designations with Pay Level 7 (Rs. 44,900 – Rs. 1,42,400) and a lot of perks and benefits. Since, these posts are very rewarding in nature, many of the candidates appearing for the SSC CGL Exam put them at the top of their post-preference submission.
This contributes to the high level of competition and some of the highest final cutoffs among all the posts. The posts in the SSC CGL Exam through which the candidates can enter into uniform services are:
- CGST Inspector, Central Excise, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)
- Preventive Officer, Customs, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)
- Sub Inspector, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

CGST Inspector, Central Excise, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs
The post of the GST Inspector is to ensure the administration and implementation of the Central law and Regulations put in place. The final selected candidates are given a khaki uniform to wear that holds much power in terms of authority among their peers.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Evaluating and monitoring tax payment and collection
- Conducting surveys, inspections and audits
- Assessing proper documentation and paperwork
- Assisting in legal procedures and representing the department if needed
Career Progression
The candidates who join the CGST Inspector post at a young age may reach the posts of Central Excise Superintendents, Assistant Commissioner and Commissioner in their careers. In addition to their roles in the Central Excise Department, they are appointed for short terms in other departments also which gives them a wide experience,
Preventive Officer, Customs, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs
The post of Preventive Officer is one of the most important job profiles offered via the SSC CGL recruitment as it acts as a checkpoint for whether the law is being obeyed by those doing trade in large quantities both domestic and international. The selected candidates are to follow the white uniform dress code and are highly appearance both in office as well as in the field.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Ensuring the timely payment of customs duties on airports and seaports.
- Preventing illegal smuggling of items on which the Indian government has put any kind of ban.
- Conducting inspections on ships, planes, cargo holds, containers and boats.
- Confiscating objectionable items and putting them under government custody.
- Ensuring proper paperwork and documentation for all the activities conducted in an official capacity.
Career Progression
The candidates who maintain a clean record and join the service at a young age can reach the post of commission towards the end of his/her career. The progression in the post of Preventive Officer is:

Sub Inspector, Central Bureau of Investigation
It is one of the most respected posts among the SSC CGL aspirants and is a uniformed service of Group B (Non-Gazetted) level. The candidates who are selected in this post are exposed to a wide range of profiles in their careers as the CBI is one of the central investigation agencies and covers almost every type of case assigned to it ranging from homicide to smuggling of illegal substances.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conducting inquiries, investigations, and gathering information.
- Attend to the open and pending cases in Courts during the trial which require the representation of CBI.
- Transporting criminals to various locations safely.
- Travel across the country and collaborate with various local authorities and other investigating agencies.
- Maintaining proper paperwork and up-to-date files and database for all the relevant cases and categories.
Career Progression
The Sub Inspectors recruited through the SSC CGL exam can go through a lot of designations in their careers. These designations add a wide range of experience and expertise to the selected candidates. The following flowchart shows the career progression of the SI post in CBI.

Sub Inspector, National Investigation Agency, Ministry of Home Affairs
The candidates selected for the sub-inspector post will directly be involved in ensuring national security. The main task will be to recognize, investigate and eliminate the threats to the citizens of India. The SIs in NIA operate behind the scenes in civilian outfits. However, whenever the display of strength is necessary, the NIA operatives can wear their uniforms with NIA written in bold letters at the back.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conducting and participating in raids and inspections on possible leads and threats identified by credible intelligence.
- Cross-examining suspects, witnesses and evidence in relation to any ongoing case in the court of law.
- Collaborating with local authorities and other investigating agencies to solve cases and make advances in the investigation.
- During incidents of terrorism, NIA personnel are given authority to that of the SHO in local police which gives them the power to conduct on-ground operations properly according to protocol.
Career Progression
The promotion cycle of the SI in NIA is not as fast as other equivalent posts. However, the range of power enjoyed by them is higher than others. The selected candidates who maintain a perfect record are promoted to the post of Inspector and then to Superintendent.
Salary of SSC CGL Uniform Posts
The candidates who clear all the stages of the SSC CGL Exams and qualify for the cutoff marks for the posts of CGST Inspector, Preventive Officer and SI (CBI) receive a handsome salary according to the Pay level 7 of the 7th CPC. Along with the basic salary and grade pay, they also receive various perks and allowances that add to their gross incomes.

How to Get Selected for the SSC CGL Uniform Posts?
The aspirants who wish to earn the uniforms for the posts mentioned above, need to go through the various stages of the SSC CGL Exam. The exam is conducted in two stages i.e. Tier 1 and Tier 2 Computer Based Examinations.
The candidates who qualify for the final cutoff of the uniform will be called for the assessment of whether they meet the specific requirements of Physical Standards, Physical Tests and Medical Standards.
