SSC CGL English Syllabus 2024
The official notification for the SSC CGL 2024 released every year contains the detailed syllabus of each subject for both levels of the exam. The syllabus for the English Language in Tier 1 exam is indicative in nature and suggests that the candidates should have an overall understanding of the language. However, the syllabus in Tier 2 provides all the topics that are to be asked in the exam. In this section let us look at the SSC CGL Syllabus for English subject for each stage of the exam one by one.
SSC CGL English Syllabus 2024 Tier 1
The syllabus for the English Language section of the Tier 1 exam says ” Candidates’ ability to understand correct English, his basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. would be tested.” This does not provide any specific topics that shall be asked in the exam. However, by analyzing the previous year’s papers, we can get an idea regarding the topics asked. The SSC CGL Tier 1 English Syllabus 2024 is as follows:

SSC CGL English Syllabus 2024 Tier 2
The official notification for the SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam provides the different topics of the English Language and comprehension section of the paper. As per the exam pattern, the English Language section carries 30 questions worth 90 marks. The topics as mentioned in the SSC CGL Tier 2 English Syllabus 2024 are as follows:
- Vocabulary – Synonyms, antonyms and their correct usage, Homonyms, One-word substitution
- Grammar – Active/Passive Voice of Verbs, Sentence structure, Spot the Errors, Fill in the Blanks Spellings/ Detecting, Misspelled words, Conversion into Direct/ Indirect narration, Improvement of Sentence
- Para jumbles
- Cloze Passage
- Comprehension Passage.
To test comprehension, three or more paragraphs will be given and questions based on those will be asked. At least one paragraph should be a simple one based on a book or a story and the other two paragraphs should be on current affairs, based on a report or an editorial.

The SSC CGL Tier 1 exam consists of 100 questions that account for a total of 200 marks. These questions are equally distributed among 4 subjects i.e. General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language.
