- Very responsible work and a lot to learn about Indian diplomacy and how countries take up matters.
- The main job of an assistant is to assist the IFS officers in their day-to-day work.
- Assistants do the file work and noting, drafting, and communication with the head office in India.
- Planning and examination of documents to be signed between the nations.
- Filing and other works related to various MoUs to be signed by ambassadors and ministers.
- Coordinating between various offices of consulates as well from HQ at Home Nation.
- Promoting friendly relations with the receiving state as well as its people, including NRI/PIO.
Work location
- Most of the MEA assistants work at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan (near Udyog Bhawan Metro).
- It depends upon your choice whether you want to stay in Delhi or want to get posted in foreign offices.

Foreign countries are divided into 5 categories – A+, A, B, C, and Hard C

Training
- There is no immediate training on joining. However, before you get a foreign posting you have to compulsorily undergo 30 days of training (spread over small modules) as well as a foreign language test.
- The Foreign language proficiency test is mandatory to get the foreign posting.
- Training is hectic with a lot to learn in a brief period for effective working.
- Training takes place at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), JNU, Delhi.

Job Responsibilities
- The work profile includes clerical work like completing files making reports and putting them up to the higher authorities.
- An ASO deals with matters like Customer grievances, policy changes, recruitment of railway operational staff, etc.
- However, you will not be involved in decision-making work which is handled by Group A officers recruited through UPSC. When parliament is in session and two months before the railway budget you may have to work late even on Saturdays and Sundays if you are in the Budget section.
Work location
You will generally be posted at Rail Bhawan in Delhi.

Working Hours
The working hour is from 9:15 am to 5:45 pm. You have to work 5 days a week and you will be given 10 casual leaves per year and 30 earned leaves per year. The job is based mostly in Delhi.
