Reasoning also known as General Intelligence is an innate capability in almost every conscious living being. This intelligence is the reason behind almost all the activities in life ranging from surviving in the wild to innovating engineering marvels. In other words, it is an indispensable ability for functioning in this world.
In almost every competitive examination conducted to select suitable candidates for any purpose, there is a section of Reasoning asked in one form or the other. Similarly, in the exams conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, candidates can find a section on General Intelligence almost invariably. In this article let us take a look at the importance of Reasoning in SSC Exams 2024.

In every exam conducted by SSC like Combined Graduate Level (CGL), Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL), Junior Engineer (JE), Multi Tasking Staff (MTS), Stenographer and so on, we can see that the Reasoning section has a significant weightage in terms of number of questions as well as marks. Let us look at the reasons how important Reasoning is in the SSC Exams 2024.
- A confluence of Mathematics, General Awareness and Language – When we analyze the types of questions asked in the Reasoning section, we see that they are based on the candidates’ abilities to comprehend the given statement, do the required calculations and use common sense & knowledge to derive at the logical conclusion.
- Problem Solving and Decision-Making – SSC is one of the largest recruiters in the country and is responsible for selecting the candidates best suited to play key roles in various vital departments and institutions of the government. - Pattern Recognition and Coordination – Various posts such as the Cypher post in the Ministry of External Affairs require the candidates to make quick mental connections and recognize patterns among pieces of information. To test this aspect, the commission includes questions on Coding-Decoding, Analogy, Syllogism, Alpha-Numeric Series, Direction Test, Blood Relation and alphabet counting.
- Analyzing the Data – In today’s world, data is the most important resource and various government departments like IB, CBI, CAG, CBDT, etc. use data from various resources to conduct their work. So, SSC ensures that the candidates appearing for various posts should possess the ability to analyze the available data to reach certain conclusions. That’s why we can see questions on Puzzles, Seating Arrangements, Ranking, etc.
