The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has announced 11,558 jobs for Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC), open to both graduates and undergraduates. As candidates prepare for the exam, many wonder about its structure—specifically, how many phases there are and how long each phase lasts. This article provides a clear overview of the NTPC exam scheme.
RRB NTPC 2024 Selection Process
The Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories (RRB NTPC) examination has a comprehensive selection process, which includes multiple stages.
- First Stage Computer Based Test (CBT 1)
- Second Stage Computer Based Test (CBT 2)
- Skill Test or Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination
First stage Computer-Based Test (CBT)
The RRB NTPC Stage 1 exam is a common test for all positions. It lasts 90 minutes and includes 100 questions divided into three sections:
- General Awareness: 40 questions
- Mathematics: 30 questions
- General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 questions
For each correct answer, candidates receive a +1 mark. However, there is a negative marking: each incorrect answer results in a deduction of a -1/3 mark. This stage is qualifying, meaning the scores are only used to determine eligibility for the next stages and do not count towards the final merit list.
Second stage Computer Based Test (CBT)
The RRB NTPC Stage 2 Computer-Based Test (CBT) is conducted separately for each pay level. For example, positions like Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist, both in Pay Level 2, will share a common Stage 2 CBT. Candidates who qualify for multiple pay levels must take the common Stage 1 CBT and then the corresponding Stage 2 CBT for each pay level.
The Stage 2 CBT lasts 90 minutes and includes 120 questions divided into three sections:
- General Awareness: 50 questions
- Mathematics: 35 questions
- General Intelligence & Reasoning: 35 questions
Each correct answer earns a +1 mark, while each incorrect answer results in a penalty of -1/3 mark due to negative marking. The final merit list is based only on the scores from this stage.
Typing Skill Test or Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for specific posts
The skill tests and Computer Based Aptitude Tests (CBAT) vary depending on the position.
- Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Required for Station Master and minimum Requirement is that Candidates must achieve a T-Score of at least 42 in each test battery to qualify.
- Typing Skill Test: Required for Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist and typing Speed needed by Candidates must be at least 30 words per minute (WPM) in English or 25 WPM in Hindi.
Note: Positions such as Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Goods Guard, and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk do not require a skill test or CBAT.
Document verification
Candidates who pass both the 2nd Stage CBT and the CBAT or typing skill test will be called for document verification. The number of candidates invited for this stage depends on the number of available vacancies and their merit.
Medical examination
The final step in the examination process is the medical examination, which takes place after document verification. Candidates who pass the medical exam will receive appointment letters from the respective Railway Administrations.
